Part 1: Imagine IT Timeline
I began my project with many great ideas, but the unexpected yet invaluable input from students (and some parents) has morphed my project into something completely different, although something better. As I press forward throughout the Spring semester, this project will be driven by the ideas and responses from the students and parents. Teacher input will play a pivotal role, as will undoubtedly, the decisions of administration; but the ultimate direction of this project will be guided by ideas of the parents and the students.
The PTA and the Student Council will play a large role moving forward. The parent committee will be encouraged to recruit parents to come together as a community to brainstorm ways to improve the school and improve participation, and the student representatives will be challenged to formulate solutions to the problems their peers have identified. And I will conduct a professional development with Mrs. Warden with the objective of strengthening the staff unity and school culture through team building, and eliciting creative community based units through problem based learning.
There has been a strong interest from a nearby religious organization to develop programs to work with the students during the 2016-2017 school year. My intention is to develop a pilot program for the month of May so that the group will have a better idea of the students they will be serving, and how they can better serve these students through the program. In addition, there is the possibility of another non-profit group being able to work with the students. They are currently limited to a few communities in the city, but are looking to expand; and the Woodlawn community is one of the potential target areas.
Finally, the administration has taken steps to provide more programs and opportunities for the school community. The students have activities like cooking, dance, drama, Mandarin, coding, construction and others available to them Monday through Friday, and the parents have their own conference room open to them every day with a computer, printer/copier and educational resources. We hope to build on this throughout the remainder of the year.
